Family · Rainy day

Family rainy day in Keswick

A rainy day out in Keswick doesn't have to mean a write-off. Start at the Derwent Pencil Museum (£6.50, genuinely good for kids), warm up over lunch at Bryson's Bakery, then take the covered Derwentwater Launch around the lake when the showers ease. Park at Lakeside car park, and finish with hot chocolate in town. A full family day in Keswick for well under £40 a head — waterproofs on, spirits up.

Couple · Cycling

Couple cycling from Ambleside

A cycling day out for two from Ambleside: roll out along the quiet Under Loughrigg lane, loop past Rydal Water and the cave, then push on to Grasmere for coffee and gingerbread. Lock up and walk the lakeshore before riding back. Park at Rydal Road, lunch at a Grasmere café (£10–16 each), and you've a romantic, low-cost Lake District day on two wheels — flat enough to enjoy, scenic the whole way round.

Dogs · Outdoors

Dog-friendly day in Coniston

A dog-friendly day out in Coniston built around lead-off freedom: walk the Tarn Hows circular first thing (flat, scenic, dogs love it), then follow the Coniston Water shore path back toward the village. Lunch at the dog-welcoming Black Bull, where water bowls come as standard. Park in the Coniston village car park. It's free underfoot all day bar lunch and parking — one of the best dog days in the Lakes.

FAQ

Common questions

Is the Lakes Planner free?
Yes — completely free and no sign-up. Tell us your group, budget, weather and transport, and we build your perfect Lake District day out in seconds, with real costs, parking and activities.
Can I plan a rainy day out?
Absolutely. Choose 'Rainy day backup' or 'Indoor escape' and the planner swaps in indoor activities — museums, galleries, distilleries, pools and cosy pubs — for whichever town you pick. Every town has a rainy-day fallback built in.
Does it work for dogs?
Yes — pick 'Dog owners' and every suggestion is dog-friendly: lakeshore walks, open fells, dog-welcoming pubs and cafés, and easy parking. Most of the Lake District is wonderfully dog-friendly.
What towns does it cover?
All 12 Lake District hubs: Ambleside, Bowness, Buttermere, Coniston, Glenridding, Grasmere, Hawkshead, Kendal, Keswick, Penrith, Wasdale and Windermere — each with its own activities, parking, lunch spots and rainy-day backup.
How does the weather feature work?
When your plan is ready, the planner pulls the live forecast for your chosen town's exact coordinates from the free Open-Meteo service — current temperature, wind speed and conditions — so you know whether to pack waterproofs or sunscreen before you set off.
