The eastern Lakes

Plan your perfect day out in Glenridding and Ullswater

"The happiest combination of beauty and grandeur which any of the Lakes affords." — William Wordsworth on Ullswater

Glenridding is a small village on the southern shore of Ullswater, the eastern Lakes' great lake — and the one Wordsworth thought the most beautiful. It's quieter than Windermere or Keswick, but the keyword footprint says everything: Ullswater Steamers run year-round from the pier (and dogs travel free), Aira Force waterfall sits four miles north on the eastern shore where Wordsworth saw the daffodils that inspired "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud", and the village is the southern starting point for Helvellyn via Striding Edge — England's most famous mountain ridge walk.

What is Glenridding famous for? Three things, really. The Ullswater Steamers — the Victorian and Edwardian heritage vessels that connect Glenridding, Howtown and Pooley Bridge. Helvellyn and the Striding Edge ridge scramble, a serious 8-mile day for experienced walkers. And Aira Force — the 20-metre waterfall and the daffodil bank that gave English literature one of its most-quoted poems.

The classic Glenridding day: steamer one way to Howtown, walk the Ullswater Way along the eastern shore (9 miles, around 4 hours), steamer back. Or Aira Force in the morning and a pint at The Travellers Rest in the afternoon — the beer garden looks straight down to the lake. The free Lakes Planner times it all around the steamer schedule and the weather.

Where Wordsworth saw the daffodils

Aira Force waterfall

A 20-metre waterfall in a dramatic wooded gorge on the eastern shore of Ullswater, four miles north of Glenridding. One of the most accessible major waterfall walks in the Lake District — 1.5 miles return, 45 minutes from the car park, suitable for most fitness levels. At its most powerful after rain.

Getting to Aira Force

  • By steamer: Glenridding → Howtown (35 min), walk north along the shore. Or steamer to Pooley Bridge and walk south.
  • By car: NT car park at CA11 0JS. £5 parking. NT members free. 20 minutes from Glenridding.
  • Best combo: steamer one way, walk back along the Ullswater Way. Full day, no doubling back.

Wordsworth's daffodils

Aira Force and the surrounding shore is where William and Dorothy Wordsworth saw the daffodils on 15 April 1802 — the inspiration for "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud," the most-quoted poem in English literature. The daffodils still grow on the bank in spring (mid-March to mid-April). Dorothy's journal entry describing them survives — the line "I never saw daffodils so beautiful" was the spark.

Best in mid-March to mid-April for the daffodils.

Shops in Glenridding

Glenridding has a village shop (walking supplies, local food, papers), a small outdoor gear shop for last-minute kit, and the Ullswater Steamers ticket office on the pier. It is not a shopping village — that's entirely the point. Pooley Bridge at the northern end of the lake has a bit more variety if you need it.
