Why Visit Glenridding & Ullswater?

Glenridding is the principal village at the southern end of Ullswater — widely regarded as the most beautiful lake in England. Flanked by the dramatic ridges of the Helvellyn range to the west and the gentler slopes of Place Fell to the east, Ullswater offers a combination of mountain drama and lakeside tranquillity that is unmatched anywhere in the Lake District. Whether you're planning a day out in Glenridding, a walking holiday, or a family trip on the Ullswater Steamers, this is one of the most rewarding destinations in the entire national park.

The Ullswater Steamers are the heart of the Glenridding experience. These historic vessels — the oldest working passenger steamers in the world — have been sailing Ullswater since 1859. Today they connect Glenridding with Pooley Bridge at the northern end of the lake, with stops at Howtown and Aira Force along the way. The classic "Ullswater Steamer Walk" — taking the steamer to Howtown and walking 9 miles back along the lakeshore to Glenridding — is one of the finest day walks in England.

For walkers, Glenridding is the starting point for the ascent of Helvellyn (950m) — England's third highest mountain and one of the most popular mountain walks in the country. The classic route via Striding Edge is a genuine mountain adventure with a knife-edge ridge scramble. For those seeking something less demanding, Aira Force waterfall (accessible by bus from Glenridding) is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Lake District, set in a beautiful National Trust woodland gorge. Glenridding also has excellent pubs, a good café, and a well-stocked outdoor gear shop.
