Lake District Bike Hire — Prices, E-Bikes & Where to Rent

Road, mountain and e-bikes available from valley towns to forest trail centres — this guide covers where to hire, what it costs, and how to book.

E-Bikes vs Regular Hire by Location Prices Before You Book FAQ

Where to rent · what it costs

You don't need to bring your own bike to ride the Lakes. Bike hire in the Lake District is everywhere — from town-centre shops in Keswick and Windermere to hire right at the forest trail centres of Grizedale and Whinlatter. Whether you want straightforward cycle hire for a flat lakeside path, a full-suspension mountain bike for a red-graded trail, or e-bike hire to make the passes painless, there's a local operator for it. This guide is built around real hire shops, typical bike rental prices and how to book — so you can sort the bike before you arrive. Already know where you want to ride? Section 1

E-Bikes vs Regular: Which to Hire

Before you pick an operator, decide what kind of bike suits your day. Electric bike hire, mountain bikes and road or hybrid bikes each shine in different parts of the Lakes.

E-bikes (pedal-assist)

The pedal-assist motor flattens the climbs and turns the passes into a genuinely enjoyable day rather than a slog. E-bike hire is the best choice for hills, mixed-ability groups, families riding together, and older or less confident riders who want more miles with less effort.

Mountain bikes

Hardtail or full-suspension mountain bike hire is what you want for the trail centres — Whinlatter's Altura and Grizedale's North Face Trail. Full-suspension costs more but soaks up the rocky, technical descents; a hardtail is fine for green and blue waymarked loops.

Road, hybrid & gravel

For lake loops and the traffic-free railway paths, a road, hybrid or gravel bike is ideal — light, efficient and comfortable on tarmac and smooth tracks. Hybrids are the everyday all-rounder for casual riders and the family paths.

Road, mountain, gravel, e-bikes, tandems and kids' bikes, trailers and child seats are all available somewhere in the Lakes — it's just a case of matching the operator to the ride.

Where the value is

Trail-centre and forest hire at Grizedale and Whinlatter is often the best value — and you ride straight from the shop with no transport costs. E-bikes cost more than standard bikes, but they save you on the hills, which can be worth every penny on a Lakeland climb.

Best-value tips

  • Book ahead online to lock in the best rate.
  • Hire at the trail centre you're actually riding.
  • Go midweek or shoulder season for cheaper rates.
  • ID is often required; helmets are usually included; check return times.

Section 4

Before You Book

A few practical things worth sorting before you turn up for your hire.

Book ahead

Summer fills up fast and the forest centres sell out. Grizedale advises booking around 20 hours' notice in the busy season — don't bank on turning up on a sunny weekend.

ID

Proof of address is often required to hire — a utility bill is fine, and most shops accept it on your phone. Check the operator's terms when you book.

Helmets

Helmets are usually included with hire — but confirm when you book, and ask about locks, lights and child seats if you need them too.

Return times

Forest centres have early last-collection and return cut-offs — at Grizedale, latest collection is around 1pm with returns by about 4pm. Start early to get a full day's riding.

E-bike charge

E-bikes come charged for the day, and there are plenty of charge points across Cumbria if you're out for longer. Ask about range and assist modes when you collect.

Weather & kit

Pack layers — a sunny valley can be a wet, windy fell an hour later. Check live weather in the planner before you set off.

Delivery option

No hire in your village — say you're staying in Grasmere? E-bikes can be delivered straight to your accommodation across the South Lakes, so you can ride from the door.

FAQ

Lake District bike hire questions

Where can I hire a bike in the Lake District?
Bike hire is easy to find across the national park. Keswick has town-centre shops with road, mountain and e-bikes; Grizedale Forest and Whinlatter Forest both have hire right at the trail centre; Windermere and Bowness have hire shops handy for the West Shore path; and Coniston has e-bike hire by the water. There are also operators who deliver e-bikes to your accommodation if your village has no hire of its own.
Can you hire e-bikes in the Lake District?
Yes — electric bike hire is now widely available and growing fast. You'll find e-bikes in Keswick, Windermere, Coniston, and at the Grizedale and Whinlatter trail centres, plus delivery services that drop e-bikes at your accommodation across the South Lakes. E-bikes use pedal-assist to flatten the hills, which makes the Lake District's climbs genuinely enjoyable for families, older riders and anyone who wants more miles with less effort.
How much does it cost to hire a bike in the Lake District?
As a rough guide, a standard hybrid or mountain bike is from around £20 for a half day and roughly £30–£40 for a full day. Full-suspension mountain bikes are higher, around £50 half day and £70 full day. Electric bikes cost more — typically from about £40+ and up to £50–£70+ for a full day. Many shops also offer multi-day and weekly rates that work out cheaper per day, and kids' bikes, trailers and child seats are cheaper. Always check the operator's current prices when you book.
Where is the cheapest bike hire in the Lake District?
The best value usually comes from hiring at the trail centre you're actually riding — Grizedale and Whinlatter — so you ride straight from the shop with no transport costs. Standard bikes are cheaper than e-bikes, booking ahead online often secures the best rate, and midweek or shoulder-season hire tends to cost less than a peak summer weekend. Multi-day rates lower the per-day price too.
Is there bike hire at Grizedale and Whinlatter?
Yes — both forests have hire on site. Biketreks operates the bike hire in the heart of Grizedale Forest with mountain bikes and e-bikes, and Cyclewise runs hire at Whinlatter trail centre on the Altura trail, with coaching and guided rides available. Hiring at the forest means you ride directly onto the waymarked trails.
Do I need to book bike hire in advance?
In summer and on weekends it's strongly recommended — popular shops and the forest centres sell out. Grizedale in particular advises booking around 20 hours ahead in the busy season, and the forest centres have early last-collection and return cut-offs, so an early booking secures both the bike and enough riding time. Out of season you can often turn up, but booking is still the safe option.
Can I hire a bike in Keswick or Windermere?
Yes to both. In Keswick, Whinlatter Bikes on Main Street and E-Venture Bikes near the bus station offer electric and regular hire, handy for the traffic-free Keswick to Threlkeld railway path. In Windermere and Bowness, Country Lanes Cycle Centre and Windermere Canoe Kayak (WCK) Bike Hire cover road, mountain and electric bikes, with the Bowness venue placing families straight onto the ferry for the West Shore path.
